Indian men go tall, fair and handsome

Tuesday, October 10th, 2006

All is fair. So believes an Indian cosmetics company that has launched a new skin-lightening cream exclusively for men in an attempt to target the growing number of metrosexual males.

Called Fair and Handsome, the advertisement for the product gives the message: be fair or remain in dark oblivion.

Until now, skin-lightening creams have been aimed almost exclusively at women. This is the first launched nationally for men.

Surveys carried out by cosmetics companies suggest growing numbers of Indian men are using the creams.

Our initial worry was men would be shy and not buy it. But these fears have proven unfounded

Emami Industries, which launched Fair and Handsome, said its research showed that figure was 29%, which some might find unlikely.

BANGLADESH: Attacks on members of the Hindu minority

Tuesday, October 10th, 2006

Amnesty International has been concerned about the situation of members of the Hindu community in Bangladesh over the past several months. Following the general elections on 1 October which were won by a coalition led by Bangladesh Nationalist Party(BNP) with a large majority, BNP supporters reportedly attacked Hindus because of their perceived support for the rival Awami League party during elections. Several Hindus were reportedly killed. Amnesty International is calling on the Government of Bangladesh to bring to justice perpetrators of these attacks regardless of their position in society or in any political party.

THOMAS L. FRIEDMAN

BANGALORE: Every time I visit India, Indians always ask me to compare India with China. Lately, I have responded like this: If India and China were both highways, the Chinese highway would be a six-lane, perfectly paved road, but with a huge speed bump off in the distance labelled ‘‘Political reform: How in the world do we get from communism to a more open society?’’ When 1.3 billion people going 80 miles an hour hit a speed bump, one of two things happens: Either the car flies into the air, slams down, and all the parts hold together and it keeps on moving — or the car flies into the air, slams down and all the wheels fall off. Which it will be with China, I don’t know. India, by contrast, is like a highway full of potholes, with no sidewalks and half the street lamps broken. But off in the distance, the road seems to smooth out, and if it does, this country will be a dynamo. The question is: Is that smooth road in the distance a mirage or the real thing?
